How I Converted my Free Substack to PAID and Signed my First Subscriber
*With a ($50) yearly subscription, I’m offering a free developmental edit (up to 5 pgs, double-spaced of a manuscript, essay, poem, or even a write-your-own obituary, hey I’m almost 80 and I think about these things!)
Here are the words of my first PAID subscriber:
Thanks to Trish McDonald’s editing and advice, my nostalgic 600-word essay of my childhood in Brooklyn, NY, was published in Newsday (circulation 87K) in a short 10-day turnaround. She is truly a great resource for me as a writer just trying to get recognition for my work. Maria Cutignola
My Info:
*Studied with Jeannine Ouellette’s Writing in the Dark Series through the Elephant Rock consortium and learned to pay attention to concrete details.
*Enrolled in the Developmental Editing Class with the author of Seven Drafts, Allison K Williams and in the process edited ten manuscripts (ten pages each, double-spaced.)
*Published my debut novel, Paper Bags, with Woodhall Press at 77 yrs. old.
My Substack, Get Gutsy, focuses on health & longevity. A retired nutritionist, I write about a different kind of hunger, the need to belong, and the loneliness that can accompany aging.
My Mission: Everyone has a story and a legacy. I’d like to help make them come alive.

My novel, Paper Bags, the story of a woman’s obsession when she learns nothing in this world is certain. https://woodhallpress.com/paper-bags
I, too, am learning so much from WITD with Jeannine. She’s incredibly insightful, supportive and talented. Her memoir was beautifully written, albeit heartbreaking to read. Looking forward to reading yours! I’m also 2/3 of the way thru a kidlit writers’ class with Jolie Stekly that’s been instrumental in my refining my first PB manuscript. Loving the process!
Bravo and congrats Trish!!
